Parents' Questions About Wrestling
How long is the season?

First practice is the first Monday in December, 2-3 days a week, with the first match the first or second Saturday in January. Concluding the last week of Febuary. High School from day after Thanksgiving to mid March.

Wrestling is a year round sport, with off-season practices and tournaments the rest of the year.

What measures are taken to protect the health of wrestlers ?

Daily, we stress the use of proper and legal wrestling techniques and manuvers. Coaches monitor closely their actions during all competitive and/or scrimmage wrestling situations so that any risk of injury is lessened.

Furthermore, the boys are required too shower after each practice and match, as soon as possible, to prevent spreading germs and rashes.

Why do wrestlers chose to lose weight?

Most wrestlers believe that by dropping excess weight, they can compete in a weight class where they will be stronger. This belief is accurate in most cases, but they must consider their health first.

At this level we have no set weight classes, so weight loss is never asked, or should be done by a Wrestler. Wrestlers are matched by weight and ability

What do they do at practice?

Each practice begins with a warm up of running and streching. Each day a coach teaches a new skill or technique, which is then drilled. Much repitition is necessary here, until it is mastered and becomes second nature. Final elements of a typical practice are competitive wrestling, where they are expected to compete against each other intensely and aggressively, and a conditionig session, wich involves an aerobic workout and agility drills.

What kind of physical changes should I expect to observe in my child?

First, they will be very active, you may notice their pants fit more loosely, their faces become more taut, and their upper body begins to show mor mucle definition. Their endurance and stamina levels increase, and they become more flexible due to the exercises during practice.

On the down side, you may  also notice bumps and bruses form on their cheeks, legs, and arms. These are typical areas thet come in contact with opponent or drill partner.

What kind of psychological changes should I espect to observe in my child?

Wrestling is one of  if not the toughest sports you're child can compete in, and if their willing to work hard it can be one of the most rewarding experiences of their life. They may become more irritable and moody. Wrestling is a long season where they sweat and strain in an enclosed area , pounding on each other to prepare for the next competition. That competition involves a one on one situation that can make even the most poised person nervouse. Therefore parents should work to keep their child's spirits as high as possible.

Please contact a coach immediately if their moody behavior turns into belligerence. This should not be tolerated regardless of any anxiety they may be feeling.

What should I do if their is a problem?

We ask that all major problems de directed as soon as possible to the head coach. However, for minor problems or concerns, feel free to call or discuss them with the coach you find most accessible.
